Schmitter, professor emeritus of political science at the European University Institute in Italy, has written numerous books and articles on a wide range of topics, including regional integration in Western Europe and Latin America, transitions from authoritarian rule in Southern Europe and Latin America, and the intermediation of class, sectoral and professional interests. His book, Transitions from Authoritarian Rule (coauthored with Guillermo O'Donnell) is regarded as a classic in the field of political science.

In 2009, Schmitter won the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science for his “path-breaking work on the role of corporatism in modern democracies, and for his stimulating and innovative analysis of democratization.” More recently he has been examining the possibilities for post-liberal democracy in North America and Europe.

The event is sponsored by the Mount Holyoke Departments of Politics, International Relations, and Economics; the Complex Organizations Program; McCulloch Center for Global Initiatives; and Weissman Center for Leadership and the Liberal Arts.
