Directed by Ng Tian Hui, Mount Holyoke orchestra director and lecturer in music, the concert will take the audience on an enchanting tour of dream states by reimagining Felix Mendelssohn’s Incidental Music for A Midsummer Night’s Dream in combination with the premiere of new music by Brooklyn-based composer Robert Honstein. MHC’s Rie Hachiyanagi, associate professor of art, serves as artistic director for the event, for which she has created an installation of hundreds of pods fashioned from delicate handmade paper, each containing dreams of individuals from the College community. Mount Holyoke dance professor Terese Freedman and Dahlia Nayar, guest artist at the Smith College Department of Dance, have joined forces to choreograph new work that delves into the full spectrum of dreams, from the meditative to the whimsical.
The MHC Orchestra will be joined by student dancers and the Mount Holyoke College Glee Club, led by Lindsay Pope, director of choral ensembles and lecturer in music. Music department chair Linda Laderach, most recently heard with the orchestra playing the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, returns as a guest in Honstein’s music. Also performing are Brittany Harris ’14 (soprano); assistant to the choral director Amanda Bistolfo ’11 (mezzo soprano); Candice Salyers, a dancer/choreographer currently pursuing a Ph.D. in dance at Texas Woman’s University; and Lucas Klinge, a Pioneer Valley dancer who has trained with Ballet Austin.
A pre-performance installation begins at 2.40 pm. The concert is free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible.
